Really sorry to hear about that Donna, but glad that you are okay. If your dealer cant reproduce the throttle response/delay I don't know how you would go about claiming this through lemon laws. Have you tried to replicate the problem yourself? Did none of the safety tech/drivers aids kick in to give you a bit of warning?

Three seconds is a LONG time.
Yea, the horn and brakes probably would have been quicker. ;)

Seriously, I'm not doubting that something occurred. But for the benefit of others who are here researching the vehicle and reading this thread, I think there's a very long leap between the OP's story and "huge product liability lemon law" stuff. Time will tell.

In any event, if the OP replaces the vehicle, steer clear of turbos.

YMMV.

I personally think they are screwing these new cars up with too much technology I don't want.

I don't want my car to turn off at a red light. I don't want my car to take over and steer for me. I don't want a car that senses traffic and sets cruise control.

I want a solid reliable responsive car that is comfortable with a great stereo.

I usually don’t post negative experiences but this may save someone’s life.

So I’ve been waiting for the Passport since the Nov 27 reveal... I know my expectations were high, but I didn’t expect to come within MILLIMETERS of getting run off the causeway into lake Pontchartrain when a disctracted driver in a refrigeration truck veered into my lane and the THREE SECOND delay in acceleration from the time I floored it until my passport actually moved!

If you know this 23 bridge from Mandeville to Metairie, thee is NO margin for error.. When there’s an accident here, it typically involves a death because someone went over the rails into the lake.

I do not feel safe in this vehicle and I’m looking at other SUVs this weekend.

This is a HUGE products-liability issue and needs to be fixed!.
Until then I’m looking into lemon laws in my state to recoup some of my $36,000.
Donna, by chance were you in Econo mode because this definitely slows down throttle response.

That was my first thought too
I intentionally shut everything off before is put it in drive.
I can recreat the issue, minus the narrow bridge and veering truck of course, by attempting to accelerate as if I were in another such dire situation. It has the same delay.
The service department says the delay is programmed in to the cars computers and that the “parameters” are created by Honda at the factory.

I don’t know if any of that is accurate, but I do know what I experienced was frightening and the delay is down right dangerous.

Do you own a passport ?
I am considering test driving others passports this weekend to time a dm compare the delay...I’ll get my husband to video it and post it if anyone’s interested.

So if I didn’t mention that I was passing a truck that was in the right hand lane I should have. I was just passing the truck door, I wasn’t even in the truck drivers blind spot. Had he looked to his left, instead of looking down at his phone, he would have seen my car. It is by no means a small vehicle.

Applying the brakes would have been a sure way to get my front passnger side clipped... there is NO Margin for error on this bridge. It is notorious for people driving over the side rail into the lake.
And I did hit the horn, but admittedly I did this after I attempted to gun it out of the way.

He swearved back to the right and hit HIS brakes ...I could not get out of his way fast enough. I dont know how he didn’t jack knife his truck.

There is no safety feature that prevents someone sideswipping you in any vehicle that I’m aware of.
Even if there were such a feature, what would it entail? Braking would have certainly ended in being hit and likely pushed over the guardrail into the lake.
They did recreate. They said it’s a delay set by Honda at the factory.

My understanding after making a few calls today is that the “parameters” are programmed as part of some fuel economy regulation.

If they don’t offer the ability to disable a “safety” feature, then they need to own the consequences of the them when/if they malfunction or fail to live up to the level of safety that advertised.

Honda allows you to disable the “safety” features. The acceleration delay isn’t a safty thing, I’m pretty sure it’s a fuel regulation thing that just so happens to cause a safety issue.

Another issue is the lane keeping assist, I don’t use it, but before I could disable it I found myself driving from the dealership in the fog.
Evidently sensors interpret the reflection of the water vapor as white lines and the LKAS goes off repeatedly even if you’re perfectly centered in the lane..VERY annoying!

Glad you are ok. Thank you for posting this important safety issue.
Its about the on going issues with this non Honda outsourced 9-speed transmission that is to blame.
There are many reviews about it and including the 2019 year. They only fixed it with starting
off in 2nd. The other issues are still there. It took those few seconds to decide to drop one or two gears.
Called gear hunting. The Honda made 6-speed doesn't have this issue. That is why......
The 9-speed is quicker 0-60, but slower in the Quarter mile, and at passing cars (Like you did)
compared to the well proven 6-speed. Also makes you wonder why Honda came out with its new
10-speed, which is much better on the posted reviews.
For your own piece of mind. The lower 3 trim levels of the Honda Pilot have the proven and
better transmission. Maybe you can ask for a trade in at the Honda dealer. Those Pilots are
a 100% Honda, and so are the upper 2 trims of the Honda Odyssey. Really no reason to leave Honda for one Transmission's bad history, even back to the 2014 jeep issues.

Thank you for the info. I really thought I did my homework with the passport.
Last summer I started looking at the CRVs last I hated the CVT transmission/turbo 4 L engines. The Pilot didn’t have the CVT, but was too big.

I was looking at Lexus’ when I got the email about the Passport back in September. It was just a tease, the aerial view of the Passport making hairpin turns and puddle level views of it going through the mud. I had a hunch Honda was going’s to redeem itself with this SUV, but had to wait 2 months for the reveal.

November 27 -LA car show, I live streamed the reveal at work on my iPad.

In retrospect I wasn’t so turned off by the CVT transmissions I thought ANYTHING else would be better :(

I wonder if they’ll make changes to the ‘all Honda’ version in the 2019 or 2020 passports?

Yes, your right. Most people here on the Forum don't like the CRV. Pilot is much better.
I was also excited to, when I first heard about the Passport. That's why I joined the Forum.
I thought they fixed the 9-speed to. As much as I like the look of this new Passport, the
on going reviews of upper trims 2019 Pilot are not good for all the issues it has. Alex on Autos
does a good job on explaining the issues on this ZF 9-speed, and why it shifts differently.
Also on the design of the dog clutches on certain gears have a feel of slight delay.
He even said if you don't like how it shifts, you can still opt for the 6-speed on the Pilot.
And what happened to you, proves the reviews. No 6-speed on lower trim Passports, like on Pilot.
That is why I will most likely get an EX Pilot, or the Proven 8-speed (outdated) Toyota Highlander.

The service department said once Honda releases a code, they’ll be able to “reprogram” the transmission.
What are the chances that’s true?
The ‘18 Camrys (like the one I traded) had some transmission issues early in production that were fixed with a software flash related to the transmission so that sort of thing is certainly possible, though I’m not familiar with Honda’s history with this sort of thing. You’d think a software flash would also enable an ‘18 Camry to have Carplay like the ‘19s do but alas here I am in a Passport.

So maybe there’s SOME hope.
How long did it take to fix the issue with the Camry?
We have a “17 Toyota Tacoma that had the transmission flashed twice... it took a year for the first flash.

There was a TSB put out within the first 5-6 months of production affecting the first 40,000 or so VINs. But a lot of “issues” seemed to work themselves out after the first 1-2k miles put on the car. Maybe a learning process for the computer to adjust to driving habits.
