Anyone tried using the quote from TrueCar as a starting point for bargaining? I'm in CA and in my area the dealers discount is between $3600 and $4000. Here's what a TrueCar offer breakdown looks like:

Passport Elite AWD
Base MSRP $43,680
Factory Installed Options+ $0
Freight Delivery Charge+ $1,045
Total MSRP $44,725
Certified Dealer MSRP Discount- $4,114
Subtotal before Dealer Fees & Accessories $40,611
Dealer Documentation Preparation Charge $85
TruePrice $40,696

This is not OTD, but is it a good price before adding on taxes + registration and whatnot?

Given this
Model Purchased---------- Crystal Black Passport Elite, Black Interior
Accessories Added-------- Splash Guards & Front Window Tint
MSRP----------------------- $44,725
Dealer Price---------------- $39,532
Dealer/Doc & Title Fee ----$206
Sales Tax (7%) --------------$2782
Price out the door ----------$42,520
I guess the dealers can go lower. If I add the 9% tax due then the quote above becomes $44359 and seems a bit high to me.

This price is too high. I was able to get mine for just under $40k from Anderson Honda in Palo Alto, CA. I also saw Livermore Honda advertise one for $39400 after I already purchased mine.

As I've seen some others mention, the price is dependent on your location...specifically the supply and demand. Also, I've seen that dealerships are discounting their early stock (check the VIN number) and are much less likely to discount something greater that VIN 10,000 and beyond.

That is normal. That's why I thought I'd point out to nikhilxp64 what I paid in California. The Truecar prices when I was shopping were exactly the same as the numbers he saw. It makes sense that dealerships are discounting their early stock because they have been sitting there longer. It's supply and demand.

Hi lisuba - thanks for the reply. I'm in the same area and Anderson's quote through TrueCar came out to $40,988 before taxes and fees. Did you get yours with all taxes and fees for under 40k? Because that would be music to my ears :)

Im still waiting on any white or steel metallic to come in with at least a March production date... Still nothing. May just have to bite the bullet and get one and prepare for the inevitable AC and Radio problems.
BTW, this is for the daughter... But I like them so much that Ill probably get one next year, but I still luv my 2012 Rav4 limited 6 banger.
Attached is the most recent offer out the door. 7% tax rate here, no trade amount figured in yet, but they do know there will be one..

I did not get mine with all taxes and fees for under $40k. I did purchase it for $39,988 though, and the final price after taxes and fees was around $43k.

The one that I got was manufactured in January 2019. Luckily no AC or radio problems yet. ***knock on wood***

I found a triple digit S/N in a dealers inventory here. But why would they discount older S/Ns? How many consumers are savvy enough to know to check the S/N from the VIN and then also care about that?

Also is the discount purely for the fact that it's older? Or also because it may not have fixes that went into the assembly line later?

I know you can get the number it was in the production & the year, but also the month?

I am not sure all earlier passports have issue. My passport was completed 12/18 and I have been fine. After I purchased the day before the super bowl, I had to take in for TCU update. My dealer sold me the car even though knew had to get updated. Other dealers seemed to keep until updated. So I am not sure if the date matters. Another kid on the forum had same birthdate, I believe KenA. Not sure if he has had problems. Hopefully not and December kids are special...
But if do understand your thought process.
Thanks

$899 for Dealer Paperwork? Is that legal??? Otherwise, it's a very good deal. From what I've seen, and it depends on your state's tax, $43,000 out the door (no accessories) seems to be a strong purchase price.

Ya know what, I dont care what they list what at what price, as long as MY bottom line is good. They can make the doc fees 5 times as much, as long as that same final price is there out the door.

Yup, finally got a couple dealers to email me a true(?) Drive Out Total Price, as I've asked a few times, so I can show my CU the numbers for what they will pre-approve me.

Seems all are at $42xxx.oo-ish. This seems to be what some here have paid for a Elite w/AWD prices??This is for a Touring, 2WD, with the running boards I requested they add. I've found only 2 of the dark green Passports' near me so far. And of course plus all their stupid dealer add ons that are on the car already; $100 for nitrogen, $399 for front windows tint, etc. REALLY??

Dealers never used to tint the front windows. Guess they found another area they can try to screw the buyer. I've always taken my new autos to the same place for those front window tints @ $75-$80 or so. Of course I will go in person and start haggling at some of these add on prices. I've done all this so far just via emails back n forth with a few dealers. They know I have outside financing in place so maybe that's why the higher totals I'm seeing. Maybe they can offer better; though I doubt it. I've financed 3 new Hondas' in last few years. But may not come into play for this Passport. I've been told NO incentives; No special finance offers by all dealers. Yeah, I get it.

Now, I may go in soon and see what they will offer for my trade. It's in very good shape but I expect to do battle to get what I've seen it's worth online. All the research I've done online previous to shopping a new auto does not seem as useful once you start talking to the dealers. But I know more now and more of what to expect, so no loss there. But I feel better prepared going to see what the best deal they will offer. If not, I'll bring my '15 Highlander back home to fight another day. Still kinda remembering my Outback test drive and so many features; for less $$. :sneaky: peace y'all ,e.
