I’m taking my Passport in for it’s 1st oil change, also check out my clunking again. It’s gotten worse now, I have about 6,000 miles on the Black Beast. Hopefully it will act up when I take a technician out for a test drive!
Hi Gary, thanks for all of your follow up on this problem. I am thinking of purchasing either a Passport or Pilot and after going over a lot of threads on various forums and review sites two things I found people noting on the con side was the rear "clunking" noise and aspects of the transmission. I was hoping that the clunking noise had already been diagnosed and could be resolved - before I purchased. Question for you. Can you duplicate the noise by going over a speed bump at a little speed? If so, then you could replicate for a technician. I did this with a similar issue on my Subaru.

I am at the dealership now for a oil change and another stab at trying to find my mysterious rattle. The good news is that today was a good rattle day! The rattle comes and goes but, today when I took the service advisor for a ride the Passport blossomed with all kinds of rattles ?.
As far as what road conditions that cause rattles is, pavement that is missing 1 layer of tar “@1/2” or so. It’s seams like road splices of manhole covers don’t seem to cause the rattles..
And I have to travel about 20 mph, any faster it seems to just float over the road imperfection.
But with that all said, I LOVE my Passport, its a GREAT vehicle!!

Now the advisor told me that the rattle is stumping some of the service tech’s, they are going to keep my Passport for awhile until the mystery is solved. They are setting me up with a rental car.

I stopped in to the Honda dealership today to see how they were doing after two days of working on my passport. They had the rear sway bar and both rear brakes removed, they said there was a service bulletin out there that said that the emergency break may be the cause of the clunking. I’ll find out more tomorrow morning, hope they find It..

At about 1566 miles on my 2WD, Touring, I heard a new maybe, small clunk today. I pulled into a small parking lot at Houston Med Center area doctor for wife. The small lot was full so I let her out and backed out into the street again. As I was in reverse, turning to the right but not to full-wheel-lock, I heard a minor clunk/thump at right rear. Or so it felt like it came from that area.

From what some have suggested here, it's hard to know if these intermittent sounds are part of the brakes/drivetrain/suspension system and are ok to live with? I guess, going to the dealership and have them check it out is the only way to really know.

I'll be watching here and following along....and listening to my Touring for any new noises, sigh.

Mine would clunk when reversing and turning the steering wheel to the right also, about midway through the turn, not to full lock. My clunk was definitely in the front end as I could feel it up there. My front struts were replaced and I heard one clunk the day after and another one the day after that, it’s been almost two weeks now with no clunks.. if yours is in the rear I’m not sure what it would be, I wouldn’t think turning the steering wheel would have an impact if that’s the case. But yeah multiple people seem to be having similar yet slightly different issues all across Honda’s truck/suv line.

Did you have your clunking noise since you’ve had the passport or did it come on after so many miles?
Not sure but my 1st service appointment was at about 3,000 miles for the clunking sound, now this time at 6,600 miles when I bought it in for the clunking issue the service advisor heard it!

We got our Passport back today, dealership had it for 3 days. What they found was the the parking brake bracket was loose causing the clunking noise.
Our Passport is quite when going over rough roads!
I think they found it, I will post the service ticket soon,so you guys can print it out and show your local Honda dealership.

After a few days, our Passport is still quite. The dealership fixed the problem.

Here is a Clunking update: its been about a month now sense the dealership found a loose parking brake bracket that they felt that was the cause of the clunking.
The noise is GONE!!! Having the car at the dealership for 3 days really paid off.
Now there is nothing not to love about my Black Beast..

I have a 2019 Passport AWD Elite and have the same Clunking problem. Bought the car in May and have managed to already rack up over 9000 miles. The clunking started around 4000-5000 miles. The car is going in to have a tire fixed or replaced tomorrow (my son/student driver went over a curb). I will also have the dealership check the clunk and let this page know what they find.
Thanks for the heads up on the parking brake bracket! That sounds like a good place to start.

I noticed this on mine right before my first service. I asked the technician to check it out while it was in the shop. He told me it is very common on Pilot and Passport...Honda knows about it. It is the parking brake shoes moving when hitting a bump. If you hold your parking brake pedal just to the point where it beeps and hit the bump, the 'clunk' goes away.
