Good morning all,
A guy I work with has a 2018 Honda Pilot and my Passport share the same issue, we have a metal to metal sound clunk coming from our right rear when going over pot holes or a large crack in the road. I went under my Passport and checked out my exhaust pipe clearances and mounts, everything looks good..
I’m thinking maybe I have a loose muffler baffle or something, has anyone had this issue?
Has anyone had something like this repaired

I've been having the same sounds on my Passport as well. It's so bad, I took it to the dealer.

They told me there was no issue after a test drive but I'm not sure if they actually had the vehicle up on a lift to determine the issue.

This seems to be an issue with passports and pilots, that’s why I think it’s a bad baffle in the muffler?

This issue seems to be heat related, the noise goes away after a little bit of run time. I am bring my Passport in tomorrow to have them to say “nothing wrong” ?

This is what I found under my spare tire, I think I found my rattle noise.

The wrench slipped out of it holder, it was touching the metal wheel of the spare tire. Time will tell, is the rattle goes away?

Just checked mine and everything is in it's right place was hoping it wasn't

Let us know what the source of the noise was. If it was the Catalytic Converter, that should be covered under warranty. However, I've never heard of this part going bad, unless you ran over something that hit it. Perhaps another case for having the shields as standard equipment?

When I checked under mine I did notice the parking brake cables were loose in their brackets ( it would rattle if I hit the cable ). Doesn't appear to be a way to make them tighter. Also I'm not sure it's the same sound I'm hearing. I can only hear it with window open.

The dealership found no issues. This doesn’t surprise me, finding that wrench out of the holder pretty much made my clunky go away. I was suggest to anyone who still has the clunking noise, and the dealer says it’s nothing wrong, to remove Tool tray that’s located I’m in the spare tire for a day or two just to see that makes a difference.

I checked the wrench, all is fine with mine. The noise is coming from outside, not really noticeable unless the windows are down but when they are, it's very loud and very annoying. At times sounds like the part of the bolt on subframe is going to fall off!

Was thinking about attaching a GoPro to the underside and driving around to try and catch it on video.

Yeah I thought I found my clunk, it came back. Drive me crazy, dealership says there’s nothing wrong, that they do not hear anything. Sure hope we find out in the future what it is.

Nope, the noise comes and goes, it’s hard to nail down! I may have to cruise the Honda Pilot site to see what those guys in the other side of the fence know ?

This issue is driving me crazy, tonight the clunking was going on every time I hit a pot hole. I will try to get my Pilot back to the dealership next week to see what we can do, This time I am going to take the service rep for a car ride while I hit the pot holes.
What surprises me is the built quality is so good and everything look to be where it should be, it got me perplexed ?

I spent some time on the “Pilot” forum and those people are also haunted with the clunking noise. In some of the articles they claim that the Ridgeline is having the same issue. LOTS LOTS LOTS of frustration with not able to find the issue. The dealerships are doing there best in trying to find the issue, they go so far as to replace the rear struts.

It's interesting that the noise is widespread across several Honda truck chassis. If it is this widespread, it may point to a design problem. If so, let's all hope the fix is a quick and inexpensive one.

I’m taking my Passport in for it’s 1st oil change, also check out my clunking again. It’s gotten worse now, I have about 6,000 miles on the Black Beast. Hopefully it will act up when I take a technician out for a test drive!

Let us know the outcome. I don't even like to drive mine anymore because the clunking is so loud.
