Reducing offset will make the wheel stick out farther. For that application, having the wheel and tire stick out an additional 20mm definitely looked better and was possibly more stable as a "desert racing support vehicle".
Makes sense. As long as wheel is not scraping. Unfortunately, there is not much room in Passport's front wheel well.
 
By its description it seems like the perfect tire for those who might be in off-road conditions fairly frequently. BUT, it doesn't come in direct-fit sizes for Passport's OEM 20" wheels. You would need to drop to 17" or 18" wheels, which would be preferable for off-road conditions anyway. Then you could get a size that would have an near equivalent circumference so as not to affect your speedometer.

17" > 245/65R17
18" > 245/60R18
It comes in a close enough size for direct-fit on Touring/Elite:

If you go from the stock 20’s down to 18’s remember you need to recalibrate the Passports onboard computer so your speedometer reflects the correct speed and you can correctly calculate your MPG.
First, it depends. Stock 245/50-R20 have the same diameter as Pilot's stock 245/60-R18.

Second, if selected rim/wheel combination has different diameter, I doubt it is possible to change the reading of the speedometer. At least this is what google search brought me. Dealers do not want to change anything and it is not clear if they have access which would allow them to change it. Seems like it's liability issue.
 
You can absolutely change it.
No questions it can be. It is all in software.

I have updated the settings on two Tundras when I went larger on Tires.
But here is the wrinkle. Different manufacturers allow different level of access to these settings. Honda is traditionally pretty locked down. So, I'd be glad if it is possible but only if it was proven.
 
I need a lot taller sidewalls for long dirt road ventures. The stock Passport tires have an outer diameter of 29.5". My EX-L has 245/50R20.
I'm thinking of the following options in order:
235/75R17 which are 30.9" and obviously 10mm narrower, or
235/70R17 which are 30", or
245/70R17 which are 30.5", or
245/75R17 which are 31.5"
I like the idea of little narrower and taller for the type of driving I'll be doing.
Pontificators and experts alike I value your opions please...
Also considering 16" wheels but on the fence on that option for now.
There is not much room in the front wheel well between the wheel and the liner when the weels turned all the way in either direction. I would say, with OEM rims for Touring and Elite wheels of up 30.5" diameter will likely fit. Any bigger might start rubbing. Still needs to be tested.

If the rims are aftermarket, it will depend on offset. As we know the OEM rims have +55 offset. So far I have not seen any aftermarket wheels with such value, +44 max, but typically between+35 and +40. The smaller offset will push the wheel out and give a little more room between the wheel and the liner when the wheel is turned to the side.
