I am considering these to attempt to ward off door dings.

They appear too low to effectively do that job. What are the thoughts of the group?

I just put these on a few days ago. It looks great but as you said, too low and offset too far inside for adequate protection unless it’s a kiddie grocery cart. Do it for looks not protection.

Great idea, but yeah - probably too low? Can they be placed anywhere on the doors?

I’m sure you can move them up. The installation templates from Honda call for them to be placed where they are currently but looks like you can move up a bit. But then it may take away from the esthetics.

I'm considering checking out other after market body side moldings as I don't care for the look of the Honda moldings. Something not so wide and placed a bit higher on the door.

Me too, there is a guy at work with a white RAV4 and painted body side moldings and they are dinged and chipped like crazy, so yeah they are doing their job, but...

I also don't like the OEM one as that outward "dimple" looks odd to me, oh, I sure it will take the brunt of any door contact, but common..

With all the blacked-out areas on the Passport, I would like to get a 2' wide black plastic (non painted) body side molding,

^Exactly where I installed mine. At my kid's sports and activities, everyone drives an SUV. We are always parking between a Suburban, Tahoe, Sequoia, etc. I agree it looks better without any molding but I hate door dings. And if you affix the molding using the templates you will have both the molding AND door dings.

They may appear to look misplaced at a very low position but in real life tests, they actually prevent the door dings. They are not just good for the aesthetics - they equally protect your vehicle.

I did a real life test in my own garage before installing the molding. I taped the molding on with masking tape where specified by the templates. Then I parked my LR4 close and tried opening the doors next to the Passport. Total failure as both LR4 doors would make contact with the Passport doors well above the molding. I'm sure if you only park between cars you will be fine with the specified molding placement. But with big SUV's it needs to be affixed higher.

I guess to each his own. This topic is popular with about every Honda model - from the CRV to the Pilot or Passport. When it was installed on mine, it was due to an error on the part of the dealership. I asked them to remove it as I hadn’t requested for it and insisted it was too low anyway to make a difference or serve it’s purpose. They literally ran tests for me to see. It did the job effectively!
I did not pay for the side molding btw-the dealership agreed to take up the cost.

Guys, just want to say thanks for the thoughts and information in this thread. I have been thinking of putting the body side moldings on the passport as well, but like others have mentioned, the default install position looks too low on the door. Going to have to do some testing of opening adjacent car doors and see where they would bump it...
