Could the icon next to each sub-forum also act as the "Mark as Read" for that sub-forum? I realize there's a button for it if you click into each sub-forum but this is a convenience I've appreciated on other sites.

Is "Mark as read" for when you never want to go into a sub-forum ever again? Because if I'm logged in, the site keeps track of what I've seen. If there's new content (threads or replies), the titles appear in bold so I know to go back in and see what's new.

it just Mark's all topics in a sub forum as being seen so they are no longer bold until the next new post or topic is made. Any replies after will re-bold topics so you know theres new content.

Got it. I was having to refresh to keep track of what was new.

Now I see how useful it is. With forum membership growing, topics I've already fully digested are getting new replies more often than I care to visit.
