Reading the above (and the Waze forum where there seem to be a number of issues with Waze/CarPlay), here is my current workaround (I rarely use Waze). I removed the icon from CarPlay altogether in iOS settings.

Are we sure that it is waze and not apple carplay, i am a little hesitant to dive back in to carplay
Good question. It will be interesting to see if any issues arise using CarPlay with other apps. I plan to continue to use CarPlay ...

1st week of ownership, was using Waze via Apple Carplay and ended up freezing the infotainment unit. It seemingly happened at random. I did not provide any user input and was using Waze and Amazon Prime Music Streaming at the time of the occurrence. I too received an audible beep and then silence. At this point, I couldn't even use the AM/FM radio ("App" wouldn't load) function but oddly enough, I still retained usage of Sirius sat radio and most of the menu navigation control but nothing else would load. After arriving at my work, when I turned off the engine and opened the door, I noticed that the infotainment unit did not power down. Later in the day, I did some research on other forums and to your comment, found the thread on using a USB keyboard. (Sidenote: Another work around was to turn down the screen brightness to the off position until you can properly reboot the unit.) I grabbed one from the office, plugged it in the USB port, did the ol' Cntrl+Alt+Del and the infotainment unit went through the reboot sequence and was working fine after that.

After some additional forum research, I too found that Apple Carplay in general has been historically buggy with not only the Honda Infotainment units which makes sense that essentially you're trying to marry 2 software systems to each other which is often times is a mixed bag of results for the consumer.

Because of my worry of battery drain should I dare to use Waze/Carplay while on a roadtrip, I'm thinking of experimenting with finding a portable/folding USB keybaord to enable me to manually reboot the infotainment unit should experience this again outside of my home area.
Sorry to hear another report of CarPlay problems. I am also about to embark on a few road trips, so I like the idea of having a small emergency USB keyboard. Something like this looks promising:

Still searching around.

I wonder if the keyboard could reboot system using bluetooth or has to be just usb. The reason I ask is the one your were looking at is dual and I was trying to save myself money by using an old bluetooth one I had for my i pad. Just thinking out loud...
That is a good question. I don't know either, but if the infotainment system is frozen BT might not work, in which case a directly connected keyboard might. I'm not opposed to spending $30, but if I can find one for less all the better ... still looking around.

I found this related thread on the Piloteers forum:

https://www.piloteers.org/forums/11...9521-display-audio-constantly-2019-pilot.html

There might be some other issues (due to defective wiring?) mixed in but it will be good to keep an eye on these issues since the Passport is essentially the same as the Pilot.

I have decided to disable CarPlay completely (already done) since I can still do all the things I want to do using Bluetooth Handsfree for phone functions and Bluetooth audio for apps.

My current assessment is that all CarPlay gives me is a bigger screen and tighter integration for the phone, but some apps have fewer features using CarPlay (eg. I listen to Audible audiobooks on long trips, but it has a reduced feature set in CarPlay so I still have to use the phone for some things, like changing chapters.) There are other issues or things missing with other apps.

I'm interested to hear other opinions on the real utility of CarPlay (after the  factor wears off).

Edit: I think I'll still invest in a small portable keyboard, just in case.

Come to think of it, I have not done an update to the infotainment system.

Anyone know if 1: there is an update available and 2. Does it correct the waze and other carplay issues?

As soon as I go home I will try and connect wirelessly to my home network from the garage and see if I can get the update to install. I have not started the Honda wireless subscription yet...
When I first connected to Wi-fi, there was an update available. Once you set it up for your home network, you should see any updates available when you start the car.

I think the issues with CarPlay/Waze are iOS and app bugs ...

Here are some good tips for CarPlay and some insight that freezes are common (and not limited to the Passport). I'll probably enable it again and see what happens...

I’ll have to wait until I get the car back to check on oil life. Are you thinking the maintenance notification may be triggering this? Seems like it’s happening a lot to people that haven’t had their vehicles as long as I have.

I try to “swipe up” on Waze when I leave the car so it’s not running in the background, but rarely remember to do that. May need to be more diligent in doing so in the future.
As with many iOS apps, there might still be bugs in the Waze app, in this case specifically related to Carplay. The app was updated about a month ago, but perhaps this issue has not yet been resolved. Since this issue was first raised here, I have disabled Waze from CarPlay. I use CarPlay often when I drive and have not had the Infotainment system freeze (I try to wait until the Infotainment system has loaded before connecting my iPhone).

However, my feeling is that the whole CarPlay/app environment is not quite there yet (all bugs not worked out). I have seen some wonky behavior like the music app suddenly loading without any prompting from me, etc.

FYI, you can see your oil life in the HondaLink app. I am at 40% at 3,800 miles.

Just picked my car up from the dealer. They included a copy of the manufacturer’s instructions to technicians. It’s a known software issue, and they believe it is related to CarPlay. Once they’ve fixed the problem a notice will go out to PP owners recommending we come to the dealer for a software update.

In the meantime, when it happens you can either disconnect the battery, or pull the “Radio/USB” fuse. The latter is easier; the fuse box is on the passenger side of the engine compartment. There is a diagram of the fuse box inside the lid (pay attention to the arrow signifying which way is front). It’s the 15 amp fuse closest to the driver.

I think I’m going to buy a cheap USB keyboard and keep it handy. With my luck this will happen again while I’m wearing a suit and it’s 105 outside.
Would you mind posting a copy of the manufacturer’s instructions to technicians?
